Barnsley Original Music
Fanzine is published by Hive publications part of Gaia Collective.
About Gaia The Gaia
Collective (Dave Hancock, Iain West, John Rose and Steve Booth) have been in
existence for over two years now and their main objective has been to promote
the otherwise neglected community of creative local musicians namely bands who
play their own music/songs. It came to the collective’s attention that a
local publication supporting the efforts of local bands was, in fact in
demand. The collective are all experienced local artists who also run a night
every two months to promote live music and local bands, which at present runs
in conjunction with the fanzine. We also run a self financed rehearsal studio
called "the Hive". The collective are also in a band and have been
actively involved locally for Ten years. Due to this unique position that the
collective holds we are certain that with the support of other initiatives,
the Fanzine will continue to reflect the dedication and enthusiasm there is in
this area for self expression. Yorkshire, in the past has nurtured several
quality original bands, but unfortunately their hasn’t been the
infrastructure, like there are in other areas, to support, encourage and
inspire talent which is obviously there and thrives in such run down
environments as Yorkshire. This is one of the aims that the collective are
trying to achieve. The Fanzine is in its seventh issue and is a monthly
publication which has only been possible due to the generosity of a local
printing business in Barnsley. The Fanzine has over 30 outlets locally
consisting of 500 copies distributed to venues, shops, Barnsley library,
Barnsley college, Merodome leisure centre rehearsal studios and music
venues and shops in and around the Sheffield/Leeds area which covers outlets
which concentrate on the promotion and support of original music. Now, the
Fanzine is a tried and tested initiative we can confidently go forward with
the project knowing its grounding and its popularity. With the feedback the
Fanzine has already produced, we are positive that with the support of outside
initiatives, we can only boost the profile of yourselves/Ourselves, as well as
the wealth of local talent this area has to offer.
Most bands and musicians come to a standstill when the word promotion is
mentioned, through the lack of money and no free outlets the bands only other
option is the expensive alternative of the commercial sector.
The Fanzine also promotes the amenities available locally which musicians may
be interested in using and informs the readership of live entertainment in the
Yorkshire area. The BOM review and preview live local gigs to promote local
nights and unsigned bands. We also concentrate on Demo/Album reviews for local
musicians to send their work for consideration. This service is free and
invaluable to bands who otherwise would not have any outlets to promote
themselves locally.
